Waszp training daniel
In the invitational Waszp Training in the Athena Pathway, on the 5th – 6th of October, my goal was to go downwind. As one of the less experienced Waszp sailors there, other people’s standards were a lot higher. On the first day, ex-topper world champion Alex Jones put me to shame by turning downwind on his first try. This made me very motivated and for the rest of the weekend I kept trying and trying however the longest I could go downwind for was only for about 10 seconds. I think that this is because I struggle to know where to point because of the apparent wind, however I know now what is wrong and can fix it next time.
I really enjoy this boat and am certain that this is the class that I want to move into when I’m older as they are fast (up to 20 knots) and exhilarating. I always feel so free when I am on the foil as it is such a smooth ride and it feels like I am flying as it is silent. When you are sailing you have to make decisions really quick and hesitating is not an option. Jaz was a great coach and I have learnt so much. The Athena pathway is a great pathway and I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to go into Waszp sailing. I have definitely got the Waszp ‘bug’ and cannot wait to join the next training camp
